Night has fallen. Your street is quiet. And then . . . the sound of singing. A single voice soars in the night. A caroler walks your street, their solo rising through the still winter air.
This will be a Christmas season like no other. We long for family who cannot share our hearth and table, for friends close in memory but, this year, far out of reach. During the darkest nights of 2020, COVID 19 means another lonely evening indoors.
Bear & Co. offers love this winter season.
Let music touch your heart. Share in the tradition of the caroler. Come to your door, or listen from your window. We bring you a little bit of holiday magic, from different lands and cultures. Your participation helps spread the warmth.
We are actors who cannot work. We are your neighbours who wish you the season’s best. We are parents who know that a warm snowsuit lets a child revel in winter.
The COMPETITION
Join us to play Catch a Caroler.
We send a caroler into your neighbourhood to sing three songs per street for one hour between 6 and 8:30 p.m, from December 12 through 20. If you Catch their Carols, email Bear and let us know where you heard our song. One person per neighbourhood will win a pair of tickets to an upcoming Bear show (once COVID restrictions allow live theatre to resume).
If you would like to donate to Bear in support, 80% of your gift will be shared among the carolers strolling Ottawa’s evening streets, 10% goes to the Snowsuit Fund, and 10% supports Bear during a plague year when our work has been sidelined.
The COMMISSION
Or . . . you commission a caroler for your street (or ask your community association to do so). $100 brings you a caroler, with 10% each to the Snowsuit Fund and to Bear. On the appointed night, our caroler will sing three festival or solstice songs while strolling your street. Email Bear to let us know where you live and which night you would prefer.
The CHARITY
Feeling like the Magi? Ask your neighbours to contribute toward commissioning a caroler for your street on a specific night and to donate a snowsuit each ($40) to the Snowsuit Fund.
Each evening’s chosen neighbourhood for the Catch a Caroler competition will be posted here. Let us know your favourite carols and listen for them. And email when you hear us to compete for a pair of tickets.
Let us help you deck the halls with boughs of holly, sing fa la la la la la la la LAH.
With deepest thanks to Ottawa City Councillors Catherine McKenney and Shawn Menard for supporting this project.
